(In Dreamtime, Jessica witnesses birth amongst a tribe of stone-age Amazonian ancestors)

It was later the same evening that Amrisha’s grandchild chose to move into her new world.  It was as predicted, as the soul-bearer had proclaimed.  As Kanadini’s waves became so strong that her mind joined the spirit world, there was an air of great excitement. All those who had birthed before knew the feeling well; when the outside world no longer exists and your mind is deep within your womb and at the same time with the ancestors, in the secure care of the Great Mother.  The full moon lit the village as the expectant mother stood outside and called to the Gods.  Hands held high up to the spectacular orb, Kanadini’s voice drifted across the huts and far into the forest beyond.            ‘Great spirit of all women, my time is here.  Draw the child from my womb as you draw the crimson blood from all women.  Bless us both as we enter your realm.’

Amrisha felt a deep knowing and excitement.  Her youngest daughter was about to experience the ultimate rite for a woman.   On hearing Kanadini’s call to the moon, the men came out of their hut to honour her.  Her husband, Mosinga, offered her gifts of fish and nuts, bowing to her in respect for this rite of passage.  He felt humble at the knowledge of this incredible physical feat his wife was about to undertake.  The elders ordered the younger men to light a large fire in the centre of the huts - it was to be a great night.

And so Kanadini returned to the moon hut and continued with short phases of her work, in between the baby’s gradual progress into this world.  The other women all wanted to be part of this great occasion.  Each time Kanadini paused to witness her child’s journey towards the Earth, as her baby’s movements down became stronger, the women chanted a repetitive song.  In between, they chatted and laughed, singing ritual songs of encouragement.  Kanadini’s sister, Pouetra had the honour of massaging her belly and birth passage with warm oils made from the leaves of the forest….

The Inspiration for Primal Birth

My Debut Novel

Through my work, I witnessed a disturbing proportion of women who were afraid of childbirth.  This, coupled with the ever-increasing rate of Caesarean births led me to explore the reasons for these truths.  My heroine, Jessica, goes on a spiritual journey through time and finds the basis of her fears as deep emotional scars caused by her ancestral past.  From the deep feminine of primal woman of over 10,000 years ago she traces the path to her own disempowering, technocratic birth in the 1970s.
